The Serpentine Wall - Frank Brown
Item #: 4
Description of Artwork:
This painting depicts a snapshot of the Serpentine Wall, located in Cincinnati along the Ohio River. Artist Frank Brown was influenced by his study of architecture when creating this piece. Often thinking about form and function, the Serpentine Wall is a great inspiration. Due to the landmark serving as a retaining wall and outdoor event seating, it has become a staple of the city.
Brown used his photography skills to capture his view of the wall while standing on the L&N Bridge. He felt it was such a strong image that he got it printed at a 36in x 48in size. Along with four other versions of the print. In efforts to bring his photo to life he glued the print to the canvas and painted over the original picture. He uses blue and orange to represent FC Cincinnati. He even paints himself surfing a massive wave. Although he has never actually surfed, it is meant to represent every unique thing he does. He rides his own wave. He also drew a person sitting alone watching, wondering what their wave is. Brown allows the original print to leave traces of itself throughout the work in aim to remind people to leave their mark on what they are a part of.
